Greater
GREATER
Consequently, our faith must be in God through Jesus Christ. The author of this book wants the readers to grasp the total awesomeness of Christ. You think Angels are magnificent? Well, Jesus is far greater than the Angels. The author then explains how God never said some remarkable things about the Angels like He declared about Jesus. In Hebrews, Chapter One, the author quotes from Old Testament Scriptures. He never said to or about the Angels any of the following (only to Jesus)…
1. “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son (v. 5).”
2. “Let all of God’s angels worship him (v. 6).”
3. “Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.
You rule with a scepter of justice.
9 You love justice and hate evil.
Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you,
pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else (vv. 8-9).”
4. “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands. 11 They will perish, but you remain forever. They will wear out like old clothing. 12 You will fold them up like a cloak and discard them like old clothing. But you are always the same; you will live forever (vv.10-12)”
5. “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet (v. 13).”
No. God never said one of these truths about the Angels (as glorious as they may be); only about Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God.
The bottom line is this (Hebrews 1:1-4)
“Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. 2 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. 3 The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. 4 This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names.”
The group Hillsong similarly attempted to capture through song the brilliance of our Lord:
You were the Word at the beginning
One With God the Lord Most High
Your hidden glory in creation
Now revealed in You our Christ
What a beautiful Name it is
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a beautiful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
You didn't want heaven without us
So Jesus, You brought heaven down
My sin was great, Your love was greater
What could separate us now
What a wonderful Name it is
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a wonderful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
Death could not hold You, the veil tore before You
You silenced the boast, of sin and grave
The heavens are roaring, the praise of Your glory
For You are raised to life again
You have no rival, You have no equal
Now and forever, Our God reigns
Yours is the Kingdom, Yours is the glory
Yours is the Name, above all names
What a powerful Name it is
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a powerful Name it is
Nothing can stand against
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
Jesus Christ is the object of our faith! Salvation is possible only through faith in Christ. The only way to God is through Jesus Christ. We are forgiven of our sins and restored in our relationship with God only through faith in Christ. The wrath of God for our sin is removed only through faith in Jesus. We have hope for the future only because of the sacrifice of Christ. Our eternal home in heaven is secured only through faith in Jesus. Purpose, peace, love, and joy in this life are possible only…you guessed it…through faith in Christ.
Let me put it candidly…there is no Christianity without Christ!
