"Look for the Rainbow," a Devotion by Gayle Lawrence
I was driving down our
Main Street
on this particular day when one minute the sun was shining and the next minute
it was raining. I thought to myself, you should be looking for the rainbow; it
has to be somewhere nearby. But today, I didn't see one since I was trying to
concentrate on my driving, being the safe driver that I am. However, I began to
think about my interest in rainbows.
As some of you know, I have always had a fascination with the very old and very popular movie "The Wizard of Oz." I've always wondered why, actually. I've shared many times as a child growing up in the Methodist church how I was 'required' to attend MYF (Youth Fellowship) as it was called back in the day every Sunday night. No excuses to skip, except IF "The Wizard of Oz" was on TV, then I got to stay home and watch it! Year after year after year. Again, why was it so special? I loved Dorothy and Toto "too". I also loved the cowardly lion, trying to be so brave but afraid of his own tail. I've come to realize what makes this movie so special to me is how I perceive the rainbow. Throughout our lives unpleasant things happen. Perhaps a run in with someone like Miss Gulch or on a more serious note, an ugly cyclone quickly blows in to our life and turns it upside down. What now? Where do we turn? Judy Garland's voice rings so clear when she sings of somewhere over the rainbow where skies are blue and troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me. Was she referring to heaven? I like to think that she was.
In Genesis 9:13, God gave us the sign of the rainbow as a covenant between Him and his people for all eternity. So every time I see a rainbow I am reminded of that promise and am reassured of His presence and His love and support for us no matter what our storm may be.
I recently heard after that horrible bombing in Boston that someone had posted on Facebook a comment made by Mr. Rogers's mother on his television series...."When something unbearable happens, you look for the 'helpers'." That statement touched my heart for when the storm does come, God sends the 'helpers'. God also gives the rainbow. It is a beautiful reminder that He is close by. His promise is to always be our Father throughout all time. Now, I know why I loved "Oz",-- because of the rainbow. God used that movie as a stepping stone in my faith journey. Next time you see a rainbow, why not pause and remember just how much He loves you.
Oh, if you ever see a 'double rainbow' in your lifetime, then you are doubly blessed. I have and that double blessing came on 9-10-99 with 2 beautiful little twin grandsons.
