"How Deep is your Love?" by Mary Beth Woolard
Matthew 9:37-38 (CEV)
Several weeks ago, I learned that a couple I grew up with lost their child in a motor vehicle accident. Jack was in his mid thirties, had a young family, had recently graduated from college and was looking forward to pursuing a new career. In the mean time, he continued to work his overnight job at a local factory. Jack had a deep and abiding faith in his Lord and Savior and he was very active in his church. One of his deepest concerns was that his father had not come to Jesus.
On the night of the accident, they believe that Jack just dozed off and never woke up…even when his car left the road. In an instant, that entire family’s life was changed. A young family no longer had a husband and father; my friends had lost their son.
During these past weeks, I have had many long “conversations” with Jack’s mother. She spoke of how her husband had finally surrendered his life to Christ and was baptized in Jack’s church. In our last talk, she shared that although she will always miss her son, she has never been angry with God. It seemed that shortly before his death, Jack had spoken to his pastor and expressed his concern for his father’s soul. Jack shared with the pastor that he would do anything, including giving his own life, to save his father.
I was overwhelmed by that young man’s example of Christ-like love. Most of us will not make that kind of sacrifice, but today, there are people perishing because they do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus says to His disciples, “A large crop is in the fields, but there are only a few workers. Ask the Lord in charge of the harvest to send out workers to bring it in.” So, how deep is your love? How far are you willing to put yourself out there for the cause of Christ? You may be the only person who can make an eternal difference in someone else’s life.
Prayer: Father, I ask for the boldness to do Your work. Hide me behind the cross so I can truly be an instrument for Your harvest.
